According to him, “there is much that can be done” in terms of infrastructure development in the Iranian direction. By way of example, Putin mentioned a short railroad line through the territory of Iran with access to the southern ports of the Islamic Republic, opening the way to the Persian Gulf and to India.
“The issue there is to build this line, which is only 146 km long. Russia is willing to do it. We need to reach agreement on the conditions of this project,” the Russian president said.
“Iran is interested in it, and our Iranian partners have now confirmed this. Russia is also interested, because from the north of Russia, from Saint Petersburg, we will have direct access to the Persian Gulf. This is a very interesting and promising route”, the head of the Russian state explained.
Putin said that Azerbaijan also showed interest in the construction of this road. “We have discussed the matter in general with our Iranian partners and friends just now. We have worked it out with Azerbaijan. Hopefully we will now get down to the actual work”, he summed up.
