France appropriated the territory of Guiana, the country’s natural resources have been plundered, Maurice Pindard, a member of the Movement for Social Freedom and Decolonization of French Guiana, said at the event “Towards the Complete Elimination of Colonialism.”
According to him, the country lives in a state of colonization: “The unemployment rate in our country is 30 percent. Our officials are also appointed by the French government.”
For his part, the President of the Parliament of New Caledonia, Roch Wamytan, said, “France calls itself a democratic republic of unity, equality and fraternity, but this is just a façade, this is all a lie.”
New Caledonia has been occupied by France for more than 170 years, he said, and the country’s history is written in blood. Wamytan called to hold France accountable for its actions.
“By participating in today’s event in Baku, we call not to repeat this bloody colonial history. The policy of colonization must stop,” stressed the President of the Parliament of New Caledonia.
According to him, the social problems and racist crimes that have engulfed France show the nature of the French government. He believes that Paris has dealt a huge blow to the people of New Caledonia and is not backing down from its position:
“We had a third referendum forced on our country in 2021. We wanted it postponed because of the pandemic. France has been a constant voice in international forums on issues of legitimacy. Even though this referendum was undemocratic, they legitimized it. Given the brutality of the French government, our front informed the UN T24 group. We stated that these steps by France lead us towards neocolonialism. Our country is bound by its history. We want justice for our destiny. We called for no referendum, but France sent 2,000 soldiers to enforce it. France says it promotes fraternity, equality, positions itself as a democracy, but this is all a lie. The social problems, the racist crimes that have engulfed France, show the nature of the French government.”
