Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Monday said “strategic partnership” between Georgia and Azerbaijan had been emphasised in meetings with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Prime Minister Ali Asadov during his visit to the country.

Papuashvili and the country’s officials discussed the “important role” of the South Caucasus region in “connecting Europe and Asia”, the Georgian Public Broadcaster said.
The Parliament official noted the Middle Corridor route, passing through Georgia and Azerbaijan to provide logistics connections between Central Asia and Europe, was “critically important” to ensure delivery of alternative energy resources to Europe and creating the “fastest and safest” connection.

In homage on the 100th birthday of Heydar Aliyev, Azerbaijan’s late President, he also said the country’s leader had laid the foundation for “historically significant” projects between the countries along with “leaders of that generation” from Georgia and Turkey.
