This morning, Iran carried out the Supreme Court’s verdict against the attacker on the Azerbaijani embassy in Tehran, ISNA reports.
The armed attack occurred on January 27, 2023, around 8:00 AM local time. Iranian citizen Yasin Huseynzade, armed with a Kalashnikov rifle, breached the embassy’s security post and opened fire on diplomatic staff.
As a result, the head of embassy security, Orkhan Askerov, was killed, and two other employees were injured. The attacker was apprehended on the spot.
The prolonged inaction of the Iranian judiciary had caused frustration in Baku and further strained relations between the two countries. The execution of the sentence may signal Tehran’s intention to ease tensions — particularly in light of the upcoming visit of Iran’s new president, Masoud Pezeshkian, to Azerbaijan. Relations between the two nations now appear to be entering a new phase.
