President Ilham Aliyev made this statement while receiving the credentials of Julien de Frepont, the newly appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Belgium to Azerbaijan.
In this regard, he called the Armenian government’s proposal to “sign everything that has already been agreed upon and leave the unresolved points for subsequent stages” completely unrealistic, emphasizing that he is unaware of any precedent for such an approach.
The head of state pointed out that during the occupation of our territories, the strict principles of the “Madrid Process” were in place, one of which stipulated that no agreements could be reached without resolving all issues. This position was mutually supported by the co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Armenia, and Azerbaijan, and we continue to adhere to it. Unfortunately, some members of the former Minsk Group have changed their stance and now support Armenia’s unrealistic proposal.
President Ilham Aliyev stated that the Armenian side often makes proposals that seemingly indicate a desire for peace, even though they know in advance that these proposals cannot be accepted. Despite this, the process continues. The president also emphasized that during the occupation of our lands—from 1992 to 2020—28 years of negotiations yielded no results. Now, negotiations have been ongoing for two years. Therefore, it is important to remain patient, realistic, and committed to achieving peace in the South Caucasus.
