On August 28, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev received the European Union’s Special Representative for the South Caucasus, Magdalena Grono.
Magdalena Grono conveyed the greetings of the EU leadership to Ilham Aliyev and, on behalf of the European Union and herself personally, congratulated the president on the important results achieved in Washington regarding the normalization of relations with Armenia and the peace agenda. She emphasized that this process makes a significant contribution to ensuring lasting peace in the region.
The guest noted that EU member states support the achievement of peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia. In addition, Magdalena Grono expressed the EU’s readiness to support the implementation of issues agreed upon between the two countries, including the establishment of a transport corridor.
Ilham Aliyev, noting the historic significance of the results achieved in Washington, particularly highlighted the role of the United States in this process. The president stated that the Washington Declaration signed with U.S. mediation, the initialing of the peace agreement, and the joint appeal by Azerbaijan and Armenia to dissolve the Minsk Group are important steps toward peace.
During the meeting, it was stressed that Azerbaijan supports bilateral confidence-building measures with Armenia. Special attention was given to the importance of establishing unhindered transport and transit links between the main part of Azerbaijan and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, with wide opportunities for cooperation with the EU in upgrading Nakhchivan’s transport infrastructure.
The conversation also included an exchange of views on the prospects for developing relations between Azerbaijan and the European Union.
