Azerbaijan is ready to provide all necessary conditions for hosting negotiations between Russia and Ukraine in Baku, should both sides express interest. This was stated by Hikmet Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan and Head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration, in an interview with the German newspaper Berliner Zeitung. He emphasized that Baku has already established itself as the diplomatic capital of the region, having hosted strategic negotiations between Russia and the United States, Russia and NATO, as well as meetings between Türkiye, Israel, and other countries.
In the interview, Hajiyev also addressed Azerbaijani-Armenian relations, noting that military confrontation or escalation between the two countries is no longer relevant. According to him, “real peace” exists in the region, even though some disputed issues between Baku and Yerevan remain — something he considers a normal part of the post-war process.
He stated that the text of the peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia has been largely agreed upon, calling it an important step toward lasting stability in the South Caucasus. However, Hajiyev noted that some unresolved issues persist — in particular, the presence of territorial claims against Azerbaijan in Armenia’s Constitution.
“We want to sign peace not only with the Armenian government, but also with the Armenian people. We hope that changes will be made to Armenia’s Constitution and that the country will officially renounce its territorial claims,” he emphasized.
Hajiyev expressed confidence that once this issue is resolved, no serious obstacles will remain on the path to a lasting peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
