“Organization of any event in the sovereign territories of Azerbaijan and participation of international representatives in these events is not a matter within the competence of Armenia,” said Head of the Press Service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Leyla Abdullayeva, commenting on the protest of the Armenian Foreign Ministry against the participation of the UN officials in the conference in Shusha.
Leyla Abdullayeva called Armenia’s interference in the internal affairs of another state unfounded and unacceptable.
“Armenia’s continuing territorial claims against Azerbaijan show that this country has not made the correct conclusions from the 44-day war. This position of the Armenian Foreign Ministry is nothing but an attempt to undermine the peacemaking efforts in the region undertaken by Azerbaijan together with the leading members of the international community. We would like to bring to the attention of the Armenian Foreign Ministry that Shusha is the indigenous territory of Azerbaijan. This city, the cradle of Azerbaijani culture, was liberated in 2020 along with other territories, and our territorial integrity was restored. The UN has never taken a neutral position on the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict while it was still ongoing. On the contrary, it supported Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity through resolutions adopted by the General Assembly and the Security Council. In this regard, it is unclear what ‘neutral status’ the Armenian Foreign Ministry is calling for. In conclusion we would like to reiterate that the sooner Armenia accepts the realities of the post-conflict period in the region, the more beneficial it will be for it,” the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry official said.
Earlier the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia expressed its protest to the UN representative in Yerevan concerning UN officials’ participation in the conference on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the UN-Azerbaijan partnership, held in Shusha on March 18.
