This operation became not only a symbol of the country’s restored sovereignty but also a new stage in ensuring peace and stability in the region.

In just 23 hours and 43 minutes, Azerbaijani troops effectively neutralized separatist forces, destroying enemy forward and deep positions, fire points, military equipment, and facilities. The use of precision weaponry and skilled tactics forced the Armenian armed formations to capitulate. Unable to withstand the might of the Azerbaijani army, the separatists were compelled to raise the white flag, marking the culmination of the operation’s successful completion.

The decision to suspend the operation was made in response to an appeal from the Armenian population of Karabakh through the Russian peacekeeping contingent. This appeal reflected the realization among the peaceful residents of Karabakh of the reality of the situation and the importance of ending the conflict.

Key conditions for the operation’s conclusion:

  • Complete disarmament of the Armenian armed groups and their withdrawal from all positions occupied on Azerbaijani territory.
  • Surrender of the entire arsenal, including heavy equipment, to Azerbaijani forces.
  • Coordination of all actions through the Russian peacekeeping contingent.

The following day, on September 20, 2023, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev addressed the nation, announcing the restoration of the country’s sovereignty. He emphasized the professionalism and high morale of the Azerbaijani soldiers who had honorably fulfilled their mission. In his speech, the President also paid deep respect to the soldiers who had fallen during the operation, calling them martyrs whose memory would forever remain in the hearts of the nation.

“Those who still doubt our resolve should remember: the ‘Iron Fist’ remains in place. No one can speak to us in the language of ultimatums! Karabakh is Azerbaijan!” declared the President, stressing that any attempts to destabilize the situation would be firmly countered.

Integration and development of the liberated territories

After the operation concluded, representatives of the Armenian community in Karabakh, who had previously avoided meetings with Azerbaijani officials, were forced to engage in negotiations in the city of Yevlakh. These discussions laid the groundwork for the integration and restoration of peace in the region. On September 28, 2023, the leader of the so-called separatist regime in Karabakh signed a document officially dissolving the regime, marking the culmination of years of efforts to restore Azerbaijani control over its native lands.

Today, restoration and development work is actively underway in the liberated areas of Karabakh and Eastern Zangazur. Azerbaijan is implementing a large-scale strategic program for the region’s revival, with internally displaced persons already returning to their homeland. Each project—whether building new roads, restoring schools, or constructing cultural facilities—reflects the country’s ambitious plans to transform these territories into flourishing and picturesque corners of Azerbaijan.

Memory and the future

During the commemorative events marking the first anniversary of the operation, President Aliyev once again stressed the importance of preserving historical memory and honoring the fallen soldiers. Azerbaijan not only demonstrated its strength but also reaffirmed its commitment to principles of justice and sovereignty.

One year after these events, it can be said with confidence that Azerbaijan not only regained control over Karabakh but also ensured long-term stability and security in the region. The restoration work that began in 2023 is progressing rapidly, and the return of life to the liberated territories is proof that Karabakh is once again becoming an integral part of a thriving Azerbaijan.
