Aykhan Hajizada, the Spokesperson for the Ministry, expressed deep concern over remarks that contradict the ongoing Azerbaijan-Armenia normalization process and undermine efforts to secure lasting peace and stability in the region.
Hajizada dismissed allegations made by the Armenian Prime Minister regarding territorial claims in Azerbaijan’s Constitutional Act, labeling them as completely false. He emphasized that no such claims exist in Azerbaijan’s legislation, contrary to assertions made by Armenia. The Spokesperson pointed out that international partners have also rejected these claims, recognizing them as baseless.
The commentary highlighted that the historical context of territories that were once part of Azerbaijan but later integrated into Armenia is well-documented. However, Hajizada clarified that this historical acknowledgment does not equate to current territorial claims against Armenia.
The Azerbaijani MFA also criticized Armenia’s interpretation of the draft peace agreement, specifically regarding the provision that neither party should use domestic legislation to avoid implementing the agreement’s obligations. Hajizada stressed that no international agreement can supersede a nation’s Constitution, dismissing Armenia’s claims as legally void.
Further, Hajizada addressed Armenia’s ongoing militarization, accusing Yerevan of perpetuating regional instability. He highlighted the disparity between Armenia’s exaggerated claims about Azerbaijan’s military budget and the reality reported by international organizations. In contrast, Armenia’s significant increase in military spending was noted as a concerning trend, especially given its historical occupation of Azerbaijani territories.
The Spokesperson also took issue with Armenia’s position on the OSCE Minsk Group, describing Armenia’s efforts to revive the defunct group as evidence of a hidden agenda against Azerbaijan. He warned that such actions suggest Armenia is not genuinely committed to sustainable peace but rather seeks to keep conflict options open for future aggression.
In closing, the Azerbaijani MFA called on Armenia to demonstrate its commitment to peace through consistent and constructive actions, in line with international law, and to refrain from contradictory and provocative statements.
