Armenia vs Armenianism… Can Armenia become a predictable state?

Pashinyan's discourse on "historical and real Armenia" has manifested itself in all its glory in today's confrontations on the border with Azerbaijan. The decades-long ideology of aggression, exclusivity and permissiveness has created the current situation.

The ideology, based on aggression and territorial claims, was cultivated by the Armenian state and Armenian churches (there are several of them). The “Armenia-Artsakh-Spyurk” triad under the umbrella of Armenian churches built a monolith that did not allow for compromise. The lack of sanctions for aggression against Azerbaijan engendered impunity on the one hand and self-righteousness on the other…

Pashinyan is not a revisionist of the Armenian ideology, because it was he who said, “Artsakh is Armenia, period”, and announced at his meetings with the diaspora (the rally meeting in the central square of Los Angeles) that he would make decisions on Karabakh with the approval of the diaspora, i.e. Spyurk…

Essentially, Pashinyan himself admitted that he adhered to the general line of the Armenian ideological concept when he first came to power, continued it during the 44-day war, and tried not to stray outside that line after the war…

Azerbaijan started to break this triad in 2020. However, the opposition from Armenia’s patrons forced Azerbaijan to act. In medical terms, “not through medicinal treatment, but through surgical intervention”.

After the 44-day war, cracks emerged in the Armenian authorities’ relationship with the churches and the diaspora. The churches and Spyurk clung to “Artsakh”, while the Armenian authorities were stuck in the “spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak” limbo.

In September 2023, “Artsakh” fell out of the triad, or rather Azerbaijan destroyed this component, the open confrontation between the churches and the Armenian authorities deepened, and the diaspora has no leverage over the Armenian government. The ideological foundations of the Armenian identity are being destroyed…

This explains why more than 60 percent of the population of Armenia does not trust anyone.

Pashinyan and co. are forced to accept the reality and are trying to formulate a new concept, because of which the Armenian Prime Minister constantly mentions the square kilometers of Armenia’s territory, started a discourse about “real Armenia”, and pushed the church and the diaspora away from the process of state governance.

Azerbaijan forces Armenia to abandon its aggressive ideology, leaving no room for maneuver, and progressively pushing Armenia to become constructive. This is a complex process that comes with withdrawal symptoms like those of a drug addict, with breakdowns and returns to inevitability.

Unfortunately, Armenia’s patrons (Russia, France, Iran) need the other, aggressive Armenia… look at the protests in the border area, look who supports them and how, both through direct participation, statements and media coverage! Note also that the ambassadors of the patron countries in Armenia are not doing anything to support the Pashinyan government in its intention to start the border delimitation process with Azerbaijan. Generic statements with incantations about the Alma-Ata Declaration do not count!

Armenia as a state is being reformatted by Azerbaijan, and is meeting resistance from the purveyors of the ideology of Armenianism. Pashinyan admits in his speeches that the path chosen in the past has led Armenia to disaster, and grudgingly acknowledges that there is no other path left. However, the resistance is growing…

This is an objective process of transformation that requires decisive action, otherwise an even greater catastrophe cannot be avoided…

Azerbaijan is helping Pashinyan as much as it can… the leaders of the Karabakh separatists are in Baku, it was Azerbaijan that took “Artsakh” out of this triad, Azerbaijan is putting forward a state-to-state, bilateral format so that not only the patron countries, but also non-systemic players like the church and the diaspora are left out of the settlement process. However, should the initiatives to turn Armenia into a civilized state fail, Azerbaijan reserves the right to act according to the situation…
