During his address at the 3rd Shusha Global Media Forum, President Ilham Aliyev announced that construction of the Azerbaijani section of the railway necessary for the launch of the Zangezur Corridor is expected to be completed by spring next year. According to him, Baku is almost finished laying the railway up to the borders with Armenia and Iran. Meanwhile, he noted that no work has been carried out on the Armenian side for the past five years.
The President emphasized that Armenia’s chances of becoming a transit country are rapidly diminishing. If Yerevan continues to block the project, it risks falling into not only transport but also political isolation.
Aliyev estimated the corridor’s potential at 15 million tons of cargo per year. “This is not only about linking the main part of Azerbaijan with the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, but about creating a fully functional international transit corridor,” he stated.
He also highlighted the growth in transit shipments through Azerbaijani territory, facilitated by infrastructure modernization, digitalization, and simplified customs procedures. “In addition, geopolitical shifts in the region are making alternative routes less stable, further strengthening Azerbaijan’s role as a key transit country,” the President added.
