Mesud Ashina, an outstanding Azerbaijani scientist and a renowned expert in neurology, has been granted significant scientific support from the Danish National Research Foundation (DNRF). His project, aimed at establishing the Center for Discoveries in Migraine (CDM), was awarded a grant of 60 million Danish kroner (over 8 Million euros), which underscores the recognition of his valuable contribution to international science.
Ashina’s new center will be one of 13 Centers of Excellence selected by the DNRF, focusing on innovative research into the mechanisms of migraines, a condition affecting millions worldwide. This high-level recognition not only strengthens Denmark’s position as a global leader in scientific research but also highlights Azerbaijan’s contribution to the advancement of cutting-edge science.
Søren-Peter Olesen, the foundation’s director, emphasized the importance of funding projects like the Center for Discoveries in Migraine, noting that the research conducted at these centers will significantly improve patients’ quality of life. Ashina’s project marks a crucial step in the fight against migraines, and his scientific work and leadership in this field have earned him international acclaim.
Mesud Ashina has also been honored with the “Heydar Aliyev 100th Anniversary (1923-2023)” medal for his services in diaspora activities, as awarded by President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan. In 2020, President Aliyev appointed Ashina to the Board of Trustees of the “YAŞAT” Foundation.
Notably, Ashina has held prominent roles such as President of the Headache Society, Secretary General of the European Headache Federation, and President of the International Headache Society from 2019 to 2021. His research, recognized with a €4 million grant from the Lundbeck Professor Program, has significantly advanced the search for new treatments for headaches. In 2021, Ashina was awarded the TÜBA International Academy Prize in Turkey.
