This was reported to Sputnik Armenia by the Chairman of the Audit Chamber of Armenia, Nairi Sargsyan.
“If these trends continue, there may be no Armenians left in the country within the next 25 years,” said Sargsyan.
According to him, the main reasons are the low birth rate, emigration, and the consequences of the war in Karabakh.
In particular, 48,000 citizens left Armenia last year and did not return. After the start of the war in Ukraine, the number of Armenians moving to Russia decreased, but there are now long queues for the U.S. green card lottery. The Chairman of the Audit Chamber does not rule out that by the end of the year, the number of people leaving Armenia may surpass the 2023 figure.
The average birth rate in Armenia has also declined.
Sargsyan also highlighted the deadlock regarding unemployment in the country.
Additionally, he pointed out that 70% of Armenia’s water resources are not managed and flow out as “losses to Azerbaijan.”
