The resolution was passed with 504 members of the European Parliament voting in favor, 4 against, and 32 abstaining.
The document, authored by the European People’s Party faction, is presented as a joint initiative of all factions.
In the draft resolution, Members of the European Parliament proposed considering granting Armenia the status of an EU candidate member.
“If Armenia is interested in obtaining candidate status and continues on the path of stable reforms that strengthen its democracy, this could form the basis for a transformative stage in EU-Armenia relations,” the draft joint resolution of the legislative body of the European Union states.
According to the adopted resolution, the European Parliament:
▪️ Calls on Armenia to be vigilant regarding the possible circumvention of EU sanctions occurring in the country;
▪️ Acknowledges that Russia’s influence on Armenia’s economy remains high;
▪️ Recognizes the acute need to strengthen cooperation between the EU and Armenia in the fields of security and defense, as Armenia reevaluates its membership in the CSTO;
▪️ Calls on the EU “to respond positively to Armenia’s request for assistance through the European Peace Facility and to support the Armenian Armed Forces”;
▪️ Welcomes “the actions taken by several Member States to provide defensive military support to Armenia and strongly urges Member States to consider similar initiatives”;
▪️ Welcomes Armenia’s decision to suspend its participation in the CSTO “after its failure to assist Armenia and seek a more reliable security architecture”;
▪️ Supports Armenia’s official request to the Russian Federation to withdraw the Federal Security Service border guards from the international airport.
The EP also expressed support for the resumption of negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan “on all unresolved issues” and called on both sides to remain committed to a “strong and peaceful resolution of the long-standing dispute through dialogue and negotiations.” The document emphasizes that the dialogue between the countries should be based on the recognition of the sovereignty, territorial integrity of both states, and the non-use of force.
