The final statement adopted after the meeting between the President of Azerbaijan, the Prime Minister of Armenia and the President of the Council of the European Union on April 6, 2022, stipulates in particular the commencement of negotiations on the drafting of a peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia and the establishment of a relevant working group.
The sides agreed to establish a joint commission on border issues and, first and foremost, to start the process of border delimitation.
Following the agreement, the State Commission on Delimitation Issues was established by a decree of the President of Azerbaijan on May 23, 2022. A similar group was formed in Yerevan.
As per the agreement, the first meeting on delimitation issues was held on the Azerbaijani-Armenian border. The meeting was of an introductory nature, and the discussions there suggest that there is a need for substantial work to determine a common position.
Besides, given the fact that, contrary to its commitments, Armenia is hampering the implementation of the Zangezur corridor and is failing to fulfill its other obligations, there is no guarantee that certain problems will not arise in this area.
Time will show whether there will be any progress at the meeting of the working group on August 29.
There will also be an EU-backed meeting between the President of Azerbaijan, the President of the European Council and the Prime Minister of Armenia in Brussels on August 31.
