The Zangezur corridor is of “utmost importance” for Armenia, as well as Baku, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov said on Tuesday.
Bayramov noted that the neighboring countries haven’t yet achieved any concrete results concerning the Zangezur corridor.
“Armenia keeps dragging out the issue on one pretext or another. It’s the country with the most limited communication capabilities in the region. Therefore, the implementation of the Zangezur corridor is important for Armenia as much as for other South Caucasian states,” concluded Bayramov.
Zangezur was part of Azerbaijan, but in the 1920s, the Soviets gave the region to Armenia. After this move, Azerbaijan lost its link with Nakhchivan.
After the 2020 Karabakh War, Baku struck an agreement with Yerevan to connect Azerbaijan with the Autonomous Republic of Nakhchivan via land and rail routes through Armenia, and open the Zangezur corridor.
Azerbaijan has focused on projects in the Zangezur corridor, which will include motorways and rail lines. Some parts of the railway between Azerbaijan and Nakhchivan, which was destroyed during the occupation, will also be repaired.
Following the completion of the railway, Azerbaijan will be able to reach Iran, Armenia, and Nakhchivan uninterruptedly by train.
The railway will also link Turkey with Russia through Azerbaijan.
