Armenian military units, with the support of military equipment and personnel from the 366th Motorized Rifle Regiment stationed in Khankendi, attacked the Azerbaijani-populated village of Qaradağlı on February 15, 1992. After two days of intense fighting, Armenian forces broke through the defenses and occupied the village on February 17.
During the occupation, the village was completely destroyed, and unarmed civilians, including innocent children, women, and the elderly, were subjected to brutal violence. As a result of the massacre, out of 117 villagers taken hostage from Qaradağlı, nearly 80 were killed with extreme cruelty, 6 went missing, and 9 were confirmed to have been taken captive based on witness testimonies.
According to witness statements, 43 of the captured Azerbaijanis were shot 2 kilometers from Khankendi, and some of them were beheaded afterward.
